Big-hearted residents and staff at an East Renfrewshire care home have handed over £250 cheque to support the launch of a new digital project for the elderly.

The donation by Newton House Care Home, North Greenlaw Way was organised by staff and residents as part of their community outreach programme.

Glasgow’s Golden Generation project is the city’s leading charity for the elderly and it launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise cash for its latest initiative, raising more than £6,000.

The new project aims to improve the quality of life for older adults in Glasgow through a range of support services including day care centres, clubs and befriending services. During the pandemic it launched a Digital Service which distributed tablet computer devices to older adults.

The charity is now looking to set up the Digital Café project. The cafes will be held in the Golden Generation Day Care centres and will also be taken to other venues including local churches as well as social housing.

Th idea, during the one hour sessions, is to help older people use their devices and also to stay safe online. During the ten sessions topics covered include sending email, using iPlayer, online security and downloading apps.

Lesley Giudici from Golden Generation said: “The Digital Café project will be able to help older people financially during this time of economic crisis.

“Being online enables you to save money on your energy by updating your meter readings regularly. And managing your bank account online enables you to have better control over your finances.

“Online shopping gives you access to more special offers. Many of us take being online for granted and don’t think about the financial benefits it brings us. The Digital Cafes will help older people be included in this.”

David Holbrook, Regional Community Relations Lead at Newton House, said everyone was delighted that the money would be put to good use.

“We have seen how, during the pandemic, digital devices really helped connect us with friends and family we were unable to meet.

“Technology can bring people together, particularly as they get older and perhaps are not so mobile and that is a huge benefit.

“These kinds of projects benefit so many people, they help avert loneliness and encourage us to remain closer, even if physically that is not always possible.

“And by joining the Digital Café project, people will also be mixing socially and sharing stories, as well as learning something new.”
